Best Jobsite Check-In Apps for General Contractors: 7 Options Compared

A side-by-side look at seven jobsite check-in and construction time clock apps, judged on what general contractors need at the gate: identity checks, offline use, subcontractor and visitor coverage, and Procore or CMiC sync.

By the ADRO team. Published , 11 min read.

Most "best construction time clock app" lists are written for contractors who run their own crews and need GPS timesheets for payroll. A general contractor has a different problem: most people walking through the gate work for someone else, and you still need to know who they are, whether they finished orientation, and what goes into the Procore daily log.

ADRO publishes this guide; we've kept the comparison to what each vendor states publicly.

The short answer: for gate check-in of subcontractors and visitors, look at ADRO, Safe Site Check In and SmartBarrel. If you mainly need crew timesheets inside Procore, Procore's own Timesheets tool may be enough. If you run self-performing crews and care most about GPS and payroll, Raken, busybusy and Workyard are built around that job.

Who is this comparison for?

This guide is for general contractors and construction managers choosing a gate check-in or time capture system that covers subcontractor workers, not only their own employees. It also helps self-performing GCs decide whether they need a gate system, a crew timesheet app, or both, and which vendors are strongest at each.

What should a general contractor look for in a jobsite check-in app?

Judge each app on seven things: how workers check in, how it verifies identity, whether it works offline, how it handles subcontractors and visitors, whether it syncs with Procore or CMiC, whether it captures safety orientation, and how clearly pricing is explained. Gate speed and sub coverage matter more than dashboards.

  • Check-in methods. QR code, access card, face scan, phone app or foreman entry, ideally with a fallback.
  • Identity verification. A card proves someone had the card; a face match or photo proves who stood at the gate. See stopping buddy punching.
  • Offline operation. Basements and rural sites drop signal. See offline time tracking for jobsite kiosks.
  • Subcontractor and visitor handling. Sub workers grouped by company and trade, and visitors signing in without installing anything.
  • Procore and CMiC integration. Which data flows each way, and how failed syncs are handled.
  • Safety orientation capture. Proof a worker completed orientation before walking on site.
  • Pricing model transparency. Per user, per site, per check-in or by quote.

How do the top jobsite check-in apps compare?

The table summarizes what each vendor states on its own website. "Not stated" means we could not find the capability on the official pages we reviewed in October 2026, not that the product lacks it. Confirm anything important with the vendor before you buy, especially integrations and offline behavior.

What are the best jobsite check-in apps for general contractors?

The strongest gate-first options are ADRO, Safe Site Check In and SmartBarrel, because they are built around checking in everyone who enters a site, including subcontractors. Procore Timesheets, Raken, busybusy and Workyard are stronger as crew time tracking tools for self-performing contractors. Each is reviewed below.

1. ADRO

ADRO is jobsite check-in and workforce software built for general contractors who need to know exactly who is on site, by contractor, and push that into Procore or CMiC.

  • Check-in methods: workers check in at the gate by scanning a QR code on their own phone, confirmed by a texted 4-digit code with no app to install, or with an access card or face scan at a Raspberry Pi kiosk that opens the turnstile.
  • Offline: the kiosk keeps working when the connection drops and syncs when it returns.
  • Visitors: visitors scan a QR code and check in with no app or account.
  • Enrollment and safety: enrollment in English or Spanish captures a face photo, training cards and a site acknowledgement, and walks each worker through your safety orientation. Workers answer a fine, sick or injured health check at check-in and check-out.
  • Verification: face scan is optional, and face data is never sold or exported. Supervisors can run face-scan spot checks on site.
  • Visibility: a live on-site count and manpower logs by contractor.
  • Integrations: imports projects, locations, contractors and trades from Procore, and exports manpower logs, daily construction reports, notes, daily uploads, photos and visitor logs, retrying failed manpower logs, reports, notes and uploads hourly. With CMiC, it imports projects, contractors and contacts and exports manpower logs and daily uploads. See the Procore and CMiC integration pages.
  • Control: role-based permissions (80+).
  • Pricing: by quote, based on projects, workers and features. There is no public price list.

Best fit: GCs who want gate check-in for every sub worker and visitor, Procore or CMiC sync, and a kiosk that keeps running offline. Less suited to: companies that want GPS tracking of workers or payroll processing, since ADRO does not track workers by GPS and does not process payroll.

2. Safe Site Check In

Safe Site Check In is a QR code check-in and digital badging product. Its site says check-in "works on any device without downloads or pre-registration" and covers "employee, subcontractors, delivery, vendors."

  • Check-in methods: QR code check-in on the worker's own device, QR badge scanning, and kiosk/tablet mode on the Advanced plan.
  • Safety: field onboarding with safety video training, and hazard awareness questions at check-in.
  • Visitors: visitor identity capture, liability waivers and arrival alerts.
  • Integrations: Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud. Its Procore page says check-in data populates the manpower log, visitor log and observations in the Procore daily log. CMiC is not stated on their site.
  • Offline and face recognition: not stated on their site.
  • Pricing: as listed on Safe Site Check In's site in October 2026, Basic 300 is $99 per month per site (annual pre-paid, up to 300 check-ins a month), Standard 600 is $199 per month per site (up to 600 check-ins), and Advanced 1000 is priced on request. A free two-week trial is offered.

Best fit: GCs who want published-price QR check-in with Procore daily log sync and no hardware. Teams looking for Safe Site Check In alternatives usually want face verification, an offline kiosk or CMiC sync.

3. SmartBarrel

SmartBarrel focuses on hardware time clocks with facial verification. Its TimeClock 4.0 is described as "Solar or battery powered and LTE connected," and its app can "turn any phone or tablet into a shared check-in station with AI facial verification."

  • Connectivity: "No WiFi required," using built-in cellular.
  • Location: geofenced jobsite boundaries so workers clock in only when on site.
  • Coverage: tracks "every worker, sub, and temp in real time."
  • Integrations: Procore, CMiC, Viewpoint Vista, Viewpoint Spectrum, Foundation, Sage and others. Its Procore page lists timesheets, manpower, sub workers, cost codes, incidents and work summaries.
  • Visitor check-in: not stated on their site.
  • Pricing: not shown; a demo request is required.

Best fit: contractors who want a portable, self-powered face verification device and broad accounting integrations, including union and temp labor tracking.

4. Procore Timesheets

Procore Timesheets lets field teams "quickly enter crew time data on mobile or web," with custom fields and approvals for payroll or ERP. Procore's timecard page says entries "appear on the project's Daily Log."

  • Who enters time: Procore's documentation covers employees in the company Directory and workers added in the Crews tool, typically entered by field teams.
  • Open API: Procore says its public API lets you pull time data from a third-party solution and push it to payroll.
  • Kiosk, gate check-in, GPS and offline: not stated on the pages we reviewed.
  • Pricing: not shown.

Best fit: self-performing GCs already on Procore who want foremen to log crew hours in the same platform. For sub and visitor check-in, teams often pair it with a gate app that writes to the daily log; see automating Procore daily log manpower.

5. Raken

Raken combines daily reporting with time tracking. Its time tracking page offers three modes: workers clock in on their own devices, workers clock in on a shared kiosk, or "a supervisor tracks time for crews and workers."

  • Kiosk verification: workers "verify their identity with a quick photo," with geolocation, and custom questions at clock-in and clock-out.
  • GPS: geofencing and GPS location tracking in the employee time clock app.
  • Daily reports and safety: automatic daily report PDFs, checklists, observations and toolbox talks.
  • Integrations: Procore, CMiC, Sage, Foundation, Viewpoint, QuickBooks, Paychex and others.
  • Offline and visitor check-in: not stated on their site.
  • Pricing: not shown.

Best fit: self-performing contractors and specialty subs who want daily reports, toolbox talks and crew time in one field app.

6. busybusy

busybusy is a GPS time tracking app for crews and equipment. It shows "live GPS locations for Employees, Equipment, and Projects on one map" and offers a kiosk mode with facial recognition that "send[s] notifications to the office if someone clocks in for someone else."

  • Check-in methods: mobile app, kiosk mode and supervisor crew clock-in.
  • Offline: its Procore page describes "GPS-verified clock in/out that keeps working even offline."
  • Procore: syncs employees, projects and cost codes, and pushes hours into Procore.
  • Payroll and accounting: QuickBooks Online, Foundation, Sage, ADP, Paychex and others.
  • Visitor check-in: not stated on their site.
  • Pricing: Free, Pro and Premium plans are offered with a 14-day trial; we could not confirm plan prices on the pages we fetched.

Best fit: self-performing contractors with mobile crews and equipment who want GPS, payroll exports and Procore hours in one app.

7. Workyard

Workyard is a GPS time tracking and job costing app. It offers a GPS time clock app, a time clock kiosk and a supervisor-led time card app, and shows "real-time locations for your whole team in a convenient map view."

  • Verification: the pricing page lists "verify clock-in with facial photos" on Pro and higher.
  • Offline: Workyard says its GPS auto clock-in stores records locally in remote areas until reconnected.
  • Payroll: Paychex, Gusto, ADP, Rippling, Paylocity, QuickBooks, Sage and Foundation.
  • Procore, CMiC and visitor check-in: not stated on the pages we reviewed.
  • Pricing: as listed on Workyard's site in October 2026, the Starter plan is $6 per user per month billed annually; the kiosk is included on Pro and higher.

Best fit: contractors with crews spread across many small jobs who want GPS time cards, payroll integration and job costing.

Which jobsite check-in app fits which kind of contractor?

Match the tool to who you are tracking. If most workers on site belong to subcontractors, choose a gate check-in tool with visitor handling and daily log sync. If most workers are your own employees spread across jobs, a GPS time clock with payroll integration usually fits better. Some GCs run one of each.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best construction time clock app?

It depends on who you track. For subcontractor-heavy sites, gate check-in tools such as ADRO, Safe Site Check In and SmartBarrel fit best. For self-performing crews that need GPS and payroll, Workyard, busybusy and Raken are built for that. Pick based on your sites, not on feature counts.

What is a good Safe Site Check In alternative?

If you like QR check-in but need face verification at the gate, an offline kiosk or CMiC sync, look at ADRO and SmartBarrel. If you want crew timesheets with GPS instead of gate check-in, Raken, busybusy or Workyard may suit you better.

Do workers need to install an app to check in?

Not always. ADRO workers check in by scanning a QR code with a texted 4-digit code, and visitors need no app or account. Safe Site Check In says it works on any device without downloads. GPS time clock apps such as Workyard and busybusy generally use a mobile app.

Which jobsite check-in apps integrate with Procore?

Based on their own sites, ADRO, Safe Site Check In, SmartBarrel, Raken and busybusy all list Procore integrations, and Procore Timesheets is native. What syncs differs a lot: some push manpower and visitor logs to the daily log, others push hours and cost codes. Ask for the exact field list.

Is GPS tracking needed for jobsite check-in?

Not for gate check-in. A kiosk or QR code at the site entrance already ties the check-in to the project, and face verification confirms the person. GPS is more useful for crews moving between small jobs. ADRO does not track workers by GPS, which some crews and owners prefer.

How ADRO handles this

ADRO is built for the gate on GC-run sites, where most workers belong to subcontractors:

  • Verified gate check-in: phone QR code with a texted 4-digit code, access card, or optional face scan at an offline-capable kiosk that opens the turnstile.
  • Safety and visibility: safety orientation shown at enrollment, health checks at check-in and check-out, a live on-site count and manpower logs by contractor.
  • Office sync: manpower logs and daily records sent to Procore or CMiC without retyping.

You can see the full feature overview on the ADRO construction time tracking page.
